GM considered taking on the Dodge Viper with a V-12-powered Chevrolet Corvette

Sporting an 8.-liter V-10, the original Dodge Viper seriously outgunned the present-day Chevrolet Corvette C4. So Typical Motors decided to drop a V-12 into the ‘Vette as a doable way to contend.

Very first noticed by Street & Keep track of, this movie from YouTube channel DtRockstar1 displays the V-12 Corvette prototype—dubbed “ZR-12″—at the Nationwide Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The prototype is entirely drivable, and appears great.

That seem is generated by a 600-cubic-inch (around 10.-liter) V-12 crafted by Ryan Falconer Racing Engines. The all-aluminum engine created a claimed 686 hp and 680 lb-ft of torque when new—eclipsing the contemporary Viper’s 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque—and weighed about the exact as an iron-block V-8.

For every the video clip, the ZR-12 also managed an 11.6-second quarter mile run at 133 mph in a March 1993 Motor Craze test.

When new, the ZR-12 even experienced Viper-like aspect pipes, whilst these ended up subsequently removed. These days, the car has a dual exhaust procedure much more like that of a stock C4 Corvette. The wheels ended up changed at some point as nicely.

The ZR-12 in no way went into manufacturing. Chevy experienced by now spent a ton of time and money producing the 380-hp V-8 Corvette ZR-1, which, along with later Z06 and ZR1 (minus the hyphen) variants, took the struggle to the Viper. Now, the Viper is absent, but Chevy is about to start the 2023 Corvette Z06 with a 670-hp flat-airplane crank V-8. Foreseeable future Corvettes are predicted to use a hybrid powertrain, combining a V-8 and electric powered motors, and an all-electrical powertrain, for additional power, so it is unlikely that we’ll at any time see a different manufacturing facility-backed endeavor at a V-12 Corvette.
