•    British ace Stuart Middleton set for 2022 championship push in Italian GT

•    Lamborghini Huracan GT3 racer returns for second season with Imperiale

•    Middleton to reunite with Alberto Di Folco for Sprint series title challenge

•    North East driver remains part of Lamborghini GT3 Junior Programme

Stuart Middleton, Vice-Champion of the 2021 Italian GT Endurance Championship in his first season at full GT3 level, is returning to Italy for the coming motor racing year where he will mount a major title bid in the sister Sprint Championship with Imperiale Racing.

Officially confirmed today, Thursday, 17th March, the highly regarded racer from Ashington in Northumberland continues with the Mirandola-based squad for a second year on Italian soil and will be partnered by 2021 team-mate Alberto Di Folco.

Notably too, the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) Rising Star remains part of the prestigious Lamborghini GT3 Junior Programme for a second year and is the only driver from the UK to be part of the group.

Producing a sensational campaign last year in the Endurance Championship, Middleton and Di Folco, along with Andrea Amici, secured one race victory and two other podiums from the four rounds and the trio were tantalisingly close to winning the coveted GT3 title during the season finale at Monza.

Middleton was also drafted in by Imperiale for selected outings in the Sprint Championship last season, taking a Pro-Am class podium on his series debut as team-mate to Mateo Llarena at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. On his second outing in the Sprint category, an all-but guaranteed victory went awry after Llarena was hit by a rival with just two laps to go.

Having impressed both Imperiale and Lamborghini during his debut season in the ultra-competitive Italian GT categories, 22-year-old Middleton is now relishing the opportunity to be back in the Sprint series this year and has only one goal – to win the championship title.

“I’m super excited to be back with Imperiale this year in the Italian GT Sprint Championship, and especially with Alberto as my team-mate once again – it’s a mega opportunity”, said the North East Caravans backed racer, “Looking at our pace from last year, I think we can say we’ve got a pretty good shot at the title. We’ll keep our feet on the ground though, concentrate and work hard.

“Obviously it’ll be my second year in GT3, so we’ll have a much stronger chance of challenging for the championship with everything I learnt last season – and we weren’t far away from winning the Endurance title in 2021. It’s always better when you have a second year in the same car, especially in a championship as super competitive as Italian GT Sprint with factory drivers and top teams.”

Middleton added:
“It’s amazing to be continuing as part of the Lamborghini GT3 Junior Programme for another year as well, and I’d like to thank everyone at Lamborghini for the opportunity. It’s set to be an exciting year, we’ll see what we can do!”

Middleton’s car racing career began, of course, in 2015 after winning the Ginetta Junior Scholarship the year prior. Going on to win the 2015 Ginetta Junior Winter Series crown, he only just missed out on the main season title the following year.

Graduating into GT endurance racing for 2017, Middleton and team-mate Will Tregurtha starred by winning the British GT4 Championship in a Ginetta G55 GT4 – making history as the youngest ever champions in a British GT category. Middleton’s tremendous season also earned him victory in the Sunoco Whelen Challenge, the youngest driver to win the prize.

Scooping a fully-funded drive in the 2018 staging of the world-renowned Daytona 24 Hours, piloting a Cadillac Dpi VR prototype race car, Middleton and team-mates Felipe Nasr, Mike Conway and Eric Curran finished an outstanding second in the twice-round-the-clock American classic.

Joining the GT4 European Series for the main 2018 season, again driving a Ginetta G55, Middleton and Tregurtha only just missed out on winning the title at their first attempt during a very dramatic final weekend. On course to claim the crown, a car fire during the finale spoiled those hopes.

Moving on for 2019, Middleton joined the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe series and ended the campaign third in the Pro class with three victories. In 2020, he returned to the USA for a season in Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America – ending the year fourth in the championship.

Middleton’s 2022 season in the Italian GT Sprint Championship will begin at Monza over the weekend 23rd/24th April. The season will conclude on Sunday, 23rd October, at Mugello.
