Have you ever ridden a motorcycle that left the whole neighborhood gazing at you and cursing as a result of the noise produced by the exhaust system? It must have been so embarrassing for you. This is what a low performance exhaust does. It gives out an annoying sound that can cause all motorists to leave the road thinking that it’s an extremely huge train using the road instead of the railway. The annoying sound is just one of the many disadvantages that come with a poor motorcycle exhaust system.
So, the big question pops up; what constitutes a good motorcycle exhaust system?
There are qualifications that a good system should meet. These include;
High performance
Performance is the most important consideration whenever you are out buying any part of your motorcycle. This is no exception when it comes to the purchase of an exhaust system. You need a high performance exhaust that will make you a proud motorist as well as give you the service expected. It should perform highly in terms of functionalities like speed, fuel consumption among others. Some touring motorcycle exhausts will result to excessive fuel consumption by your bike while others will reduce its functionality rendering it to very poor performance. All these faults make the entire bike useless. This is why performance always comes first before anything else.
Adequate air flow
A good exhaust system should allow sufficient outflow of gases. How well or badly gases flow out is determined by the size of the pipe. A too small exhaust pipe will cause inbuilt pressure as the gases try to squeeze their way out. This in return causes the pipe to block resulting to reduction in the performance of the overall motorcycle. On the other hand, a too wide pipe results to outflow of gases at an extremely high rate than supposed. This too renders the bike to reduced performance. Therefore, the size of the touring motorcycle system should be right; neither too wide, nor too small.
Easy and cheap Maintenance
You do not need a motorcycle that will take up most of your resources in its maintenance. A motorcycle exhaust system that requires your mechanic to service it too often is not a good one. A good system is one you can service on your own cheaply and take it to the mechanic only when you feel like it has a technical problem. Therefore, if you have been visiting the mechanic too more often, yours is not a quality one. The key thing is; an exhaust system should be easy and cheap to maintain.
Matching exhaust and motorcycle
Different motorcycles are made in different ways and with diverse specifications. This means that parts of one bike are not a hundred percent compatible with another motorcycle. Thus, purchase an exhaust system because it is compatible with your type of motorcycle and not because you saw it on another bike. Failure to this, your bike might be at risk of poor performance. If you are not sure on the right exhaust for your bike, it’s always good to consult your mechanic or manufacturer.
The above elements qualify an exhaust pipe to be called a good exhaust system. Good luck in your next purchase!
